Your first 10 hours

Updated October 4, 2026. Prices are U.S. list prices; check the official shop before you buy.

The plan: install, follow the starter zone, learn 5 key controls, quest to level 10, then use the group finder for your first dungeon. Do not worry about "doing it right." Nothing in the first 10 hours is permanent.

Hour 0: Set up

  1. Make a free account at Battle.net and install the Battle.net app.
  2. In the app, pick World of Warcraft, check that the version menu says the modern game, and press Install.
  3. Pick a realm (server). Any realm with "New Players" or low population is fine.
  4. Make your character. See Your first character for help.

Hours 1-2: Learn 5 controls

Follow the starter zone. It teaches the rest.

Hours 2-6: Quest and level

Hours 6-10: Your first dungeon

  1. Open the group finder (I) and pick a dungeon. Choose the Damage role for your first run.
  2. Or choose a Follower Dungeon to practice with computer-controlled allies first.
  3. Say "first time" in chat. Most groups will explain the fights.
  4. Follow the tank. Do not attack enemies before the tank does.
  5. Stay out of glowing areas on the ground. That one rule prevents most deaths.

After 10 hours

If you are having fun, buy a subscription and keep leveling. Try a Delve, join a guild for help and company, and look up a guide for your class's spec when you reach the level cap.
